THE CULTURE SHOW FILMS
Here’s a selection of films I made for THE CULTURE SHOW on BBC TWO.
Pedro Almodovar
Afrobeat
The Midland Hotel
August 2009
Lauren Laverne interviews Spanish film director Pedro Almodovar at the outdoor premiere of ‘Broken Embraces’ at Somerset House in London.
I dressed our set with hanging light-bulbs and potted geraniums, complete with red carpet and chairs, to make him really feel at home.

July 2008
Lauren Laverne explores the musical genre Afrobeat and meets its founding father, Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, and fan, Damon Albarn.

June 2008
Architecture critic Tom Dyckhoff shows us the newly-restored, art deco gem, The Midland Hotel in Morecambe and wonders if it’ll help the regeneration of the town.
We throw a party, inviting the BBC Big Band and guest star Beth Rowley to bring back some long-lost glamour.

Busking Challenge: The Dodge Brothers
Liverpool Architecture
Toby Young on “How to Lose Friends...”
March 2008
Tom Dyckhoff journeys to Liverpool in the Culture Show helicopter to survey the architectural skyline and tell us his fears for its future.

March 2008
Mark Kermode takes the Culture Show Busking Challenge. He proves there’s an audience out there for skiffle by beating Moby and Roisin Murphy to the top spot.

January 2008
Toby Young has been thrown off the New York set “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People” - a film based on his memoirs. I persuaded Toby to take us round his old NYC haunts and he persuades me to gatecrash the film set so we can keep an eye on Simon Pegg who’s playing him.

The ONE Show – Rubbish Xmas Presents
December 2007
Phil Tufnell meets contributors to talk about their worst-ever Christmas presents and invites the Complaints Choir to sing about them - includes Phil not pretending to be a crap ice skater!
Example tries Stand Up Comedy
Art from the Air (part 1)
(delivered by The Culture Show)
October 2007
Rapper Example, aka Eliot Gleave, told me he’d always wanted to try stand up comedy. So I made it happen for him, gave him a mentor in Richard Herring and followed his progress to the Lyric Hammersmith.

May 2007
I originated this idea which eventually became a six part strand. Art critic Andrew Graham-Dixon flies across the UK to view land art from the air.
A joy to film.
I also brought this 2 helicopter shoot in under budget.

Maxim Vengerov
Maximo Park
Living Icons: Final 3
March 2007
I wanted to film this interview with the world’s best virtuoso violinist in a dramatic location. My choice of a church in Spitalfields with classically spilled lighting and a smoke machine matched the interview’s needs exactly.
The acoustics were fantastic but Maxim didn’t want to play because he said he was too cold. I managed to persuade him. This is the result.

March 2007
The band gave me exclusive access to film them making their second album.
From the bedroom in Newcastle-upon-Tyne that serves as their rehearsal space, via the recording studios in St. John’s Wood to their live show at the Brixton Academy.

December 2006
This film canvasses for further voting in a campaign to honour our greatest Living Icons - with finalists Sir David Attenborough, Morrissey and Sir Paul McCartney.
Morrissey achieved double the amount of votes than the other two over the filming day but Sir David Attenborough went on to win.
